Fela grave, Feb 20, 2026 · Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a man who refused to be a footnote in history, choosing instead to become the very ink with which the narrative of modern African defiance is written. Two years later, Fela returned to Nigeria, restarted the Koola Lobitos, and became influenced by James Brown. Quickly tiring of European composers, Fela, struck by Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra, formed the Koola Lobitos in 1961, and his band became a fixture in London’s club scene. Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is widely credited as the creator of Afrobeat in the early 1970's, which rapidly became the most avidly followed style across West Africa. His political career unfolded when a distinctly Nigerian left – rooted in universities, trade unions and parts of the state – was at its intellectual and institutional height. The 2019 documentary film My Friend Fela (Meu amigo Fela) by Joel Zito Araújo, explores the complexity of Kuti's life "through the eyes and conversations" of his biographer Carlos Moore.
